The Public Ministry in the Dominican Republic has announced that it will be requesting that the National Permanent Court impose coercive measures on lawyer Emilio López and cockfighter Wagner Taveras Taveras, who are suspected of committing gender-based violence and physical aggression against their partners, journalists Tamara Martínez and Amelia Alcántara, respectively. The accused were arrested last week after videos were released on social media that showed the journalists being attacked by their partners. López and Taveras are being held in preventive detention until a judge issues their respective coercive or unconditional release orders. Martínez had initially claimed that the video of her altercation with López was a “social experiment,” but later admitted that she had been coerced and was being blackmailed, although she did not disclose the nature of the blackmail. Additionally, Alcántara denied being the victim of an attack, stating that her alleged injuries were the result of people wanting to profit from the incident, although she did acknowledge the support she received from those who believed her claims.
